Let’s begin today with our foundational texts for this series. Genesis 1:3 says, And God said, let there be light and there was light. And Proverbs 18:21 says, Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof. Let’s pick up our teaching today in Genesis 11.
Genesis 11:1-9 reads, the whole earth was of one language and of one speech. 2 As they traveled east,[a] they found a plain in the land of Shinar, and they lived there. 3 They said to one another, “Come, let’s make bricks, and burn them thoroughly.” They had brick for stone, and they used tar for mortar. 4 They said, “Come, let’s build ourselves a city, and a tower whose top reaches to the sky, and let’s make a name for ourselves, lest we be scattered abroad on the surface of the whole earth.”
5 Yahweh came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men built. 6 Yahweh said, “Behold, they are one people, and they all have one language, and this is what they begin to do. Now nothing will be withheld from them, which they intend to do. 7 Come, let’s go down, and there confuse their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech.” 8 So Yahweh scattered them abroad from there on the surface of all the earth. They stopped building the city. 9 Therefore its name was called Babel, because there Yahweh confused the language of all the earth. From there, Yahweh scattered them abroad on the surface of all the earth (World English Bible).
There are many things we can learn from this study and l will give you four of them.
1) Speaking in Agreement with God has Always been His Plan.
2) But Man has Desired to “Do his Own Thing.”
3) God Stopped Them by Doing Something with Their Words.
4) God’s Will for Your Words is First Agree with His Word.
The individuals in this text we’re trying to build a tower to the heavens by the power of their words. Since this was not God’s will He decided to stop them by confusing their speech. If we speak the word of God and the will of God we will have good success. Remember, in Mark chapter 11, Jesus said you can have what you say.
